Reading Room

Reading isn’t about finishing the book it is the act of immersing yourself into another reality. Reading is no different than any other skill it takes a lifetime to fully understanding and comprehending different literary devices. I believe in reading in one sitting, reading over the course of weeks and months however long it takes you to form your own opinion of the art. At TGW literature and writing are the most important practice of community. Always feel welcome to suggest new recommendations.

Title: Assata: An Autobiography

Author: Assata Shakur

Thoughts: Definitely cried at different parts of the book. Assata’s story is one that asks us to allow ourselves to be redeemed and strive to be revolutionary. It took me about a week and a half to finish and my favorite part is her poem to one of the women she met in jail. I hope the Cuban sun has been most favorable to her.

Title: Hood Feminism: Notes From The Women That A Movement Forgot

Author: Mikki Kendall

Thoughts: Amazing read from the first page to the last. I learned so many lessons from the work of art that is Hood Feminism. I quote from this book often to explain the relationship Black women have with violence and how were often left out of the conversation and are blamed for harm done to us. It’s one of those books that makes you feel seen afterwards.
