Texas Girl Writes was created on June 13, 2023 by Xandria McGilber. Texas Girl Writes is a collection of essays, poems, and articles that center the stories and lived experiences of Black Women and marginalized communties.

I think that has to do with my awareness that in a sense we all have a certain measure of responsibility to those who have made it possible for us to take advantage of the opportunities.
Angela Davis
My art is heavily inspired by the intellectual and literary contributios of Nikki Giovanni, Toni Morrison, Angela Davis and more pioneers of Black Feminist theory. I applied the practices from these theories into many avenues of my life and community organizing. As a native Houstonian I took it upon myself to ask my own thought provoking questions and highlight the good of communities inside the U.S and outside. The goal of Texas Girl Writes is to critically engage with the works of African American writers through an Afro-Texan lens.

I’m grateful for everyone who takes the time to read my writing. I started TGW during my internship in Washington but my Afro-Texan roots are what inspired me to build a home for my writings. Texas Girl Writes is more than what I have experienced it is an love letter to the stories different communities have told me.
I strongly believe in the power of community and organizing within our own neighborhoods. A crucial part of this is how we communicate whether that be orally or written. From protesting to phone banking I’ve tried to play an active role in shaping my community.
Texas Girl Writes stands in solidarity with all oppressed communities and will always honor the voices of those most affected.
