Texas Girl Writes is proud to host the wonderful poetry of Taj M on the platform. I came across Taj’s poem and was instantly captivated and moved by the beautiful expression of Black Trans boyhood.

To all my Black boys you are seen and you are loved. Please support Taj’s art and the works of our beloved Trans community.

Black Boy Becoming
black boy you still bleed come full moon
still have a subtle switch in your hips know its alright to cry have yet to be taught different
black boy
your face has become a home for tracing constellations proof of your becoming black boy
still don't know how to walk two left feet on you black boy
i see your chest puffed out
then your back bowed when you realize pulling on your shirts in self awareness black boy
you're afraid of men afraid of walking home late
still black boy you still nurture
still have a skincare routine you've never known a 2 in 1
black boy
your transformation feels lonely
no one talks about this kind of change where you're from
your mother still stuttering over
"girl, i mean, um boy"
"you know it's so hard for me"
"this is who i've known you as"
black boy black boy you are a black boy

AUTHOR BIO

My name is Taj Levi, I’m a black trans masculine writer and spiritual worker. This poem was inspired by my second puberty and my willingness to accept where I am in my transition in each moment. Being trans/gender non conforming as a black person is such a unique experience that can sometimes feel isolating and confusing. Writing about the process of coming into a new body and the awkwardness of it all pulls me into a sacred and intimate feeling that I have fought for. The vulnerability behind this piece feels like a safe space for myself and other black trans boys/mascs.
